The graphene industry in India

A quiet strategic buildup — from lab-scale synthesis to national missions.

Graphene — a single atomic layer of carbon arranged in a hexagonal lattice — is the strongest, thinnest and most conductive material ever measured. India has moved decisively over the last five years to build sovereign capability in this space.

In 2023 the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) announced the India Innovation Centre for Graphene (IICG) at Maker Village, Kochi — a ₹94 crore joint initiative with Digital University Kerala, C-MET and Tata Steel to translate graphene research into commercial products. In parallel, the National Graphene Mission is being scoped to coordinate synthesis, standards and application development across defence, energy and construction.

The Indian market — coatings, composites, energy storage, sensors and biomedical — is projected to cross USD 750 million by 2030, growing at 35% CAGR. Defence applications (EMI shielding for radar, stealth coatings, corrosion protection for naval assets) and infrastructure (high-performance concrete, road overlays) are the two verticals with the sharpest strategic pull.

Multi-functional graphene-composite coatings for radar equipment, avionics enclosures, naval hulls and offshore infrastructure. Engineered for > 30 dB shielding effectiveness across 1–18 GHz while cutting corrosion rate by an order of magnitude over conventional zinc-epoxy systems.

Graphene admixtures for precast concrete

A graphene-oxide dispersion dosed at parts-per-thousand into cement matrices — nucleating denser C-S-H gel, refining pore structure and improving flexural strength by 25–40%. The result: precast elements that hit design strength with ~20% less cement, or exceed it at parity.

I'm Anirudh Ram Rajha — a BBA graduate from Manipal University and an MBA from NMIMS, Mumbai (2021–23). I currently manage my family business in Chennai, Sudharsan Insulations, where we manufacture high-voltage and high-current test kits used across testing & commissioning workflows and heavy-industry applications.

My exposure to graphene began at the Graphene India Conference, Kochi 2026, where I got a first-hand view of the domestic supply chain, the IICG mandate and the application gaps between lab-grade material and industrial deployment.

Jaitraya Ventures is my own firm, formed to venture into the graphene advanced-materials industry — starting with EMI shielding and anti-corrosion coatings for defence, and graphene-enhanced admixtures for the concrete industry, and expanding into adjacent manufacturing opportunities as the market matures.
